The village that produces the coffee beans we have been selling since 2009 is nestled deep within the mountains of Chiang Rai, in Thailand's northernmost region. The village is home to approximately 650 residents across 80 households, with women making up a slightly larger proportion of the population. It is a village of the Akha\u2014a mountain-dwelling ethnic group\u2014who believe that spirits inhabit all things\u2014the mountains, trees, earth, and wind\u2014and who live their lives in accordance with this faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This area was formerly renowned for the cultivation of opium poppies\u2014the source of the narcotic opium\u2014and, as the point where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar converge, it came to be known as the \"Golden Triangle.\" At one time, it is said that the region accounted for the vast majority of global opium production\u2014a trade in which even this very village participated. Today, however, forests have been planted here, and within those forests, extensive coffee crops are now being cultivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While cultivating coffee within a steep, forested terrain is by no means an efficient endeavor, the beans are grown within a rich ecosystem\u2014flourishing alongside a diverse array of trees and flora, and teeming with birds, insects, and microorganisms. Consequently, pest populations that threaten the coffee plants never reach problematic levels; thus, the coffee trees thrive in robust health without the need for any pesticides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, situated at an altitude of approximately 1,200 to 1,500 meters, the region experiences a moderate diurnal temperature range. At the same time, the surrounding forest trees serve to temper both intense sunlight and biting cold, allowing the coffee plants to mature slowly and steadily\u2014a process that ultimately contributes to the exceptional flavor of the beans. In February 2012, at a coffee cupping competition held during an international exposition in Chiang Mai, Thailand, these beans were awarded First Prize (Highest Honor) within the domestic category.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
